Ignite Leadership Academy Program

Empowering Women and Girls to discover their Extraordinary selves through education and mentoring in leadership development, and technology, preparing them both academically and professionally.

Our leadership module focus is esteem building, team building, presentation skills, social and cyber ettiquette, financial literacy, and preparation for college.  Extra curriculum activities include aviation classes, art, and experiential learning trips.

Students receive hands-on training in their community- story mapping to understand how this technology can create positive change in their communities and the world. This specialized program focuses on teaching fundamental GIS skills, including storytelling with mapping data points, building maps, identifying trends, and forecasting future outcomes, including, demographic and environmental changes. Students are challenged to develop a project that will improve the environment in their communities

Our calloboration with the Mapping Black California Initiative and with Esri, a global leader in geographic information system (GIS), gives SOEW the ability to expose our students to cutting edge GIS technology leading to success in college and careers.

Conversation Salon Series

This event is designed to bring together community leaders, professionals, educators, and technologists across cultures to share ideas and innovations that impact their communities and the world. Attendees will have the opportunity to connect with extraordinary individuals, learn about cutting-edge technology, explore unique art exhibits.  Meet Shirley Coates, President/CEO

Shirley Coates is a seasoned leader, corporate executive, and business consultant who is dedication to empowering the lives of women and young girls, and making a significant impact for change.

She is the founder and president of Society of Extraordinary Women Inc. (a non-profit organization), whose mission is to empower women and girls to discover their extraordinary selves through education, and mentorship for a lifetime.

Shirley’s life work is exemplified in her current role as founder and Executive Director of the Ignite Leadership Academy for Girls. In response to studies showing that 30% of minority teens in the Inland Empire were failing to graduate from high school, and finding that a rising number of teenage girls were also falling through this achievement gap, The Society of Extraordinary Women developed a curriculum designed to improve this outcome.

The Ignite Leadership program is a 10-week immersion program designed to empower and encourage young girls who may have social barriers, lack opportunities, or lack access to resources.  The program’s focus is building self-esteem, team building, leadership development, presentation skills, social etiquette, financial literacy, GiS technology including community mapping, story mapping, and applications that benefit the environment. college preparation.  

Their premier program is the Ignite Leadership Academy for Girls. This program provides specific skills that support personal and academic success. The skills taught in our program enhance the development of the total person. Their leadership module focuses on esteem building, team building, goal setting, social and cyber etiquette, financial literacy, community engagement, and preparation for college and careers. Through a collaboration with the Mapping Black California Initiative, and Esri, (a leader in GIS technology worldwide), we are able to provide a comprehensive program in coding, community mapping and spatial analytics. Extra curriculum activities include performing arts, film and aviation. This comprehensive curriculum is designed to encourage and ignite the passion for lifelong learning, personal growth.

Shirley has received national, state, and local awards for her work in the community, and the impact she has made in the lives of women and girls. Shirley is a member of the Riverside Chamber of Commerce, Rotary International Eastside Chapter, Mapping Black California Imitative, and currently serves on the Magnolia Center Business Council. She is a past graduate of Leadership Riverside.

She is known in entrepreneurial circles as being one of the first minority women to own a successful aerospace electronics company in Irvine, California.  Additionally, she is the past president and managing partner of a European real estate franchise with over 500 offices worldwide specializing in residential and commercial properties.

She is active in her church and serves as the director of women’s program, Bible study teacher, and choir director.

Her core values are: Passion, Purpose, and Professionalism.
